World ranked No. 6 Zverev comfortably saw off Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in straight sets in the second round, with a 6-1 6-3 victory.
The 20 year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov came through a challenging second round match against the higher ranked Italian Fabio Fognini with a 3-6 6-3 6-3 win.
The 22 year-old German Alexander Zverev has a 100% record from his three previous matches against Shapovalov, winning all three of them in straight sets.
Two of those victories were in 2017, with Zverev winning the ATP Masters 1000 Canada semifinal 6-4 7-5 and a round-robin match in the Laver Cup in the Czech Republic, 7-6 7-6. At the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid semi finals last year, Zverev had his most convincing win against Shapovalov, easing home 6-4 6-1.
Although Shapovalov is a more experienced player since he last played Zverev, the head-to-head record does make this look a tough ask for the young Canadian, even more so as he is also involved in the Men’s Doubles event at this tournament.
